How do tornadoes happen?

Khiari Nina

Highland Elementary School

Most tornadoes form along cold fronts with a clashing of a  cold dry airmass into a warm, moist airmass. You also need wind shear with height, meaning changing of wind speeds and wind direction with height. The increase of wind speed with height causes the atmosphere to spin horizontally. The changing wind direction with height creates spin and when all the ingredients are in place a tornado can form.

The five worst states for tornadoes based on frequency of tornadoes per square mile are Oklahoma, Florida, Mississippi, Indiana and Louisiana.
