ASK THE METEOROLOGIST
“How do you make good observations?”
Mrs. Einck’s Kindergarten Class, Griffin Creek Elementary
There are indeed correct ways to observe the weather! There are so many different platforms meteorologists use to analyze the current conditions of the atmosphere. For example, satellite and radar, water vapor imagery, buoy reports, metar reports, station plots, etc. the list goes on and on!
Station plots allow us to view the current conditions of particular cities every hour across the nation. We can see current temperatures, dewpoints, cloud cover, wind direction, wind speed, pressure tendancies and much more in any city that reports the data.
Believe it or not, there are correct ways to observe and reference how much cloud cover is in the sky. The terms, broken, scattered and few all have definitive meanings! There are also correct ways to measure the air temperature!
